Why On Earth

“We are all here on earth to help others. What on earth the others are here for we don’t know.” — W.H. Auden

Auden is being clever here, highlighting the sneaky unraveling that sometimes happens between our ideas of We, All, and Other. Truth is, if we recognize the All of us as anything, the concept of “other” begins to disintegrate. Yet, at the same time, we do experience “otherness”…

Perhaps this is the whole point of being here on earth — to reconcile our singularity and totality, other and everything. Maybe we do it by falling in love. Why on earth, indeed…

Happy Earth Day, friends. I can't wait to see you for our Saturday celebration service at 6:00 pm. Community and cheer at 5:30. XO, Drew
