“Always the cat remains a little beyond the limits we try to set for him in our blind folly.” — Andre Norton
Last week, Travis and I saw an amazing documentary about the street cats of Istanbul. The film presented these beautiful creatures being fed and adored by neighborhoods and communities, by the entire city. And I was struck by the fact that this care and affection was being lavished upon the cats with absolutely no expectation of reciprocity, nothing in return. The people of Istanbul, at least those featured in the movie, care for the cats simply because they care. They love the cats on the cats’ own terms.
This feels to me like surrender — giving and loving for the sake of giving and loving. And it strikes me that whenever we surrender in a spirit of generosity and freedom, what we’re surrendering to is always our Self.
